ITIL Foundation (Version 5) is the entry-level ITIL certification for professionals who need a shared language and core concepts for modern digital product and service management. ITIL Designation

ITIL Designations (ITIL Version 5) are role-based certification programs for professionals who need recognized capability beyond ITIL Foundation. Each designation groups advanced modules into a clear pathway that aligns with hands-on practice, service and product leadership, or executive strategy and governance. ITIL Master

ITIL Master is the final certification level in the ITIL framework. This designation shows that a professional can apply ITIL principles, methods, and techniques in strategic, tactical, and operational environments. It verifies the ability to coordinate service management practices with business goals to produce measurable results.

Candidates achieve the ITIL Master designation by completing three prerequisite certifications:

ITIL Managing Professional (MP)

ITIL Strategic Leader (SL)

ITIL Practice Manager (PM)

This level represents the full suite of ITIL knowledge, covering all Specialist, Strategist, and Leader modules. It is intended for senior managers and consultants who lead IT service management and digital strategy. The designation is granted to individuals who have demonstrated expertise across the entire ITIL library.

ITIL Master (Version 5) - Level Content

  • Integrated ITIL leadership across contexts - apply ITIL principles, the ITIL Value System (SVS), guiding principles, and practices in strategic, tactical, and operational work.

  • End-to-end service and product management - coordinate governance, practices, and continual improvement to translate demand and opportunity into measurable outcomes.

  • Cross-pathway capability - use knowledge from ITIL Managing Professional, ITIL Strategic Leader, and ITIL Practice Manager to align service delivery, product leadership, and strategy.

  • Business alignment - connect service management decisions to business goals, risk, value, and performance measures.

Certification

ITIL certifies knowledge of ITIL guidance for digital product and service management, including shared concepts, principles, and practical ways to create and sustain value across products and services.

Typical certification path (ITIL Version 5 scheme):

  • ITIL Foundation (Version 5) - entry level, introduces core concepts, models, and principles. If you already hold ITIL 4 Foundation, you can take ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5) (planned retirement date: 31 December 2027).

  • Role-based designations (each builds on Foundation):

    • ITIL Practice Manager (ITIL PM) - complete ITIL Transformation plus one bundled practice module: Monitor, Support and Fulfil (MSF), Plan, Implement and Control (PIC), or Collaborate, Assure and Improve (CAI).

    • ITIL Managing Professional (ITIL MP) - complete ITIL Product, ITIL Service, ITIL Experience, and ITIL Transformation.

    • ITIL Strategic Leader (ITIL SL) - complete ITIL Strategy and ITIL Transformation.

  • ITIL Master - achieved by completing ITIL PM, ITIL MP, and ITIL SL.

  • ITIL Extension Module: AI Governance - an additional module assessed by a closed-book exam, focused on responsible AI governance alongside ITIL practices.
