UXQB® CPUX-F Foundation Level Certification

UXQB® CPUX-F Foundation Level Certification

The UXQB CPUX-F (Foundation in Human-Centred Design) level validates core knowledge of usability and UX based on ISO 9241-210.

It covers key terms, concepts, and the human-centred design process, including planning HCD work, understanding context of use, defining user requirements, designing solutions, and evaluating designs (for example usability testing and inspections).

No prior UX experience is required, although experience can help. CPUX-F is also the prerequisite for advanced CPUX certifications.

At UXQB CPUX-F (Foundation in Human-Centred Design), candidates learn the core concepts of usability and user experience. Topics typically include:

  • Key UX and usability terms, principles, and quality criteria

  • Planning HCD work, defining goals, roles, and deliverables across the HCD cycle

  • Understanding and documenting context of use, including users, tasks, and environments

  • Eliciting and specifying user requirements and usability requirements

  • Designing solutions using an iterative approach, including prototypes

  • Evaluating designs through usability testing and inspections, and reporting findings

CPUX-F also prepares candidates to progress to UXQB advanced-level CPUX certifications.

2

UXQB® Advanced Level Certification

After completing CPUX-F (Foundation in Human-Centred Design), candidates can move into Advanced-level CPUX modules that go deeper into specific competence areas of the human-centred design (HCD) process. Each Advanced module focuses on one area and ends with its own certification exam. Advanced levels also include a practical exam in addition to the theoretical exam.

After completing the CPUX-F Foundation certificate, professionals can continue with CPUX Advanced Level modules that build deeper competence in defined parts of the human-centred design (HCD) process aligned with ISO 9241-210.

Advanced Level is modular, each module focuses on one UX competence area and ends with its own exam (often available as theory only or theory plus practical).

  • CPUX-UR (User Requirements Engineering) - plan and run requirements work, document context of use, specify user and usability requirements.

  • CPUX-UT (Usability Testing and Evaluation) - plan, conduct, analyze, and report usability evaluations with clear findings and recommendations.

  • CPUX-DS (Designing Solutions) - develop and refine design solutions using iterative HCD, including prototypes and design rationale.

  • CPUX-MQB (UX Management and Strategy) - cover management and strategic topics for organizing and steering UX work.

Certification

The International Usability and User Experience Qualification Board (UXQB®) is an international consortium of usability and user experience experts. The goal of the UXQB is the further development and administration of the certification program “CPUX – Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience”. CPUX is an international standard for qualification of usability and user experience professionals.

UXQB Certification Path

The UXQB CPUX certification system gives you a clear and structured path to build professional UX skills. It is internationally recognised and designed for anyone working with user experience, usability or human-centred design.

1. CPUX-F: Foundation Level

This is where everyone starts.
You learn the fundamentals of usability and human-centred design, including user needs, context of use, requirements, design principles and basic evaluation methods.
After the training, you take the CPUX-F exam and receive your Foundation certificate, which allows you to continue with advanced UX modules.

2. Advanced Modules

With the Foundation certificate, you can specialise in the areas that match your role:

  • CPUX-UR: User requirements and user research

  • CPUX-DS: Designing UX solutions and creating prototypes

  • CPUX-UT: Usability testing and evaluation

  • CPUX-M: UX management and leadership

Each module ends with its own exam. Some modules include both a theory exam and a practical assignment to verify hands-on skills.

3. Professional UX Profile

By combining the Foundation level with one or more advanced certificates, you build a strong, recognised professional UX profile.
You choose the modules that fit your development path, whether you focus on research, design, testing or UX management.

Summary

CPUX-F → choose your advanced module → complete theory and practical exams where required → build your professional UX certification path
