Description

The Managing the Test Team (MTT) module is one of three components of the ISTQB® Expert Level Test Management (CTEL-TM) certification. Full CTEL-TM certification requires passing separate exams for this module, Strategic Test Management, and Operational Test Management. ISTQB® Expert Level certificates are valid for seven years.

Content focuses on the people management skills used by Test Managers to build and lead teams. Topics include recruitment, setting objectives, performance reviews, and managing distributed teams. Participants learn to communicate with stakeholders, advocate for quality, and handle ethical issues while promoting the test team's role within the organization.

What You Will Learn

This training prepares you for the official ISTQB® Certified Tester Expert Level Test Management: Managing the Test Team (CTEL-TM-MTT) certification. The course focuses on personnel management and team development in software testing.

The course content is based on the official syllabus and is structured around the following key areas:

  • Building test teams: You will learn how to select qualified professionals, evaluate job applications, conduct effective interviews, and create structured onboarding programs.

  • Employee development: The course teaches methods for identifying personality types and team roles. You will learn how to agree on clear goals and conduct performance reviews properly.

  • Leadership and motivation: You will gain skills to motivate your team for the long term. One focus is on leading distributed or multi-site test teams and targeted team-building activities.

  • Assertiveness in the company: You will learn how to represent the interests of the testing department to various stakeholders, justify test budgets, and establish quality standards within the organization.

The training combines theoretical foundations with practical case studies and group work. This allows you to apply what you have learned directly to your daily work. After the course, you will be able to build test teams, resolve conflicts, and demonstrably increase the efficiency of your testing department.

Certification & Exam

This training prepares you for the ISTQB® Certified Tester Expert Level Test Management, Managing the Test Team, CTEL-TM-MTT exam. CTEL-TM-MTT is a separate exam part within the ISTQB® CTEL-TM Expert Level certification. To achieve full CTEL-TM certification, you must pass all three parts: Strategic Test Management, Operational Test Management, and Managing the Test Team.

For admission, you typically need CTFL, CTAL-TM, at least five years of practical testing experience, and at least two years of experience in the respective Expert Level topic. The exam covers, among other things, team building, leading test teams, roles, objectives, performance evaluation, distributed teams, stakeholder communication, and ethical issues. An ISTQB® Expert Level certificate is valid for seven years.

After successfully completing this course, you can independently perform the following tasks in practice:

  • Design and implement organization-wide test strategies that align with overarching business goals and are based on measurable quality metrics.

  • Create detailed master test plans and set up associated governance dashboards to make test progress transparent for management.

  • Analyze complex problems in test management, coordinate interfaces with other project roles, and establish standardized test processes.

  • Lead and structure test teams effectively by clearly defining roles, supporting team members in a targeted way, and successfully guiding necessary organizational changes.
