SAFe®

1

SAFe® Foundation-Level Entry

Leading SAFe® Agilist Training, you will get an introduction to the fundamentals of SAFe® and be taught the principles and practices to confidently drive your Lean-Agile transformation.

The training also provides the guidance and tools to lead effectively in remote environments with distributed teams. Additionally, you will gain insights into best practices for improving your team's productivity and efficiency.

2

SAFe® Team and Role Based Certifications

SAFe® Team and Role Based Courses are practitioner-focused certifications for people who apply SAFe day to day on Agile teams and across an Agile Release Train (ART). Options include SAFe Practitioner (SP) / SAFe for Teams, SAFe Scrum Master (SSM), SAFe Advanced Scrum Master (SASM), SAFe Product Owner / Product Manager (POPM), and SAFe DevOps Practitioner (SDP).

These courses differentiate from Leading SAFe by going deeper into role responsibilities, team and ART events (such as iteration events, PI Planning, and Inspect and Adapt), and practical workflows. Most credentials are renewed through SAFe Studio membership, and SSM also requires continuing education units (CEUs) within its renewal cycle.

3

SAFe® Advanced

SAFe Team and Role Based Certifications are practitioner-focused credentials for people who apply the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) in daily work on Agile teams and across an Agile Release Train (ART). These courses are commonly chosen after, or alongside, Leading SAFe (SAFe Agilist) when a role-specific view is needed.

Training and exams vary by credential, but options typically include SAFe Practitioner (SP) / SAFe for Teams, SAFe Scrum Master (SSM), SAFe Advanced Scrum Master (SASM), SAFe Product Owner / Product Manager (POPM), and SAFe DevOps Practitioner (SDP). Compared with Leading SAFe, these courses go deeper into role responsibilities, team execution, and ART coordination, including key events such as PI Planning, iteration planning and reviews, and Inspect and Adapt.

Certification

SAFe Certification Path

SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) certifications show that you can apply SAFe roles, practices, and principles in a Lean-Agile enterprise. Most SAFe certifications follow the same pattern: take an authorized course delivered by a SAFe Practice Consultant (SPC), prepare using the included study materials, then pass a timed, multiple-choice online exam. Certifications are typically renewed on a recurring basis through SAFe Studio membership.

1. SAFe Foundation-Level Entry

Many candidates begin with a foundational certification such as SAFe Agilist (SA) from Leading SAFe (often chosen by leaders and change agents) or SAFe Practitioner (SP) from SAFe for Teams (often chosen by team members). These certifications cover SAFe basics, Lean-Agile principles, and how work is planned and delivered through constructs like the Agile Release Train (ART). After the course, you take the certification exam to earn the credential.

2. Role-Based SAFe Certifications

After your first certification, you can add role-based credentials that match your day-to-day work. Common options include:

  • Scrum Masters (SSM, SASM)

  • Product Owners and Product Managers (POPM)

  • Architects (ARCH)

  • DevOps and Continuous Delivery (SDP)

  • Lean Portfolio Management (LPM)

  • Agile Software Engineering (ASE)

  • Agile Teams (SP)

Each credential typically requires completing the related course and passing its exam. Some advanced paths assume prior SAFe experience or a related certification.

3. Applying SAFe in the Enterprise

After you certify, you apply SAFe in practice, for example participating in PI Planning, supporting ART execution, improving flow, and working across teams and portfolios. To keep credentials active, you renew through SAFe Studio membership. Renewal is generally annual, and some certifications can have extra maintenance requirements (for example, SSM has a CEU requirement). For organizations, a SAFe Enterprise Subscription may renew some certifications automatically, but SPC renewals are handled separately.

Summary

Choose an entry certification (often SA or SP) → take the authorized course → pass the online exam → add role-based certifications as needed → renew in SAFe Studio to keep certifications active.
