Description

SAFe® for Hardware Teams is an instructor-led course for mechanical, electrical, systems, quality, compliance, product, and project professionals working with hardware development.

Available through remote or in-person training providers, it covers Lean-Agile practices for physical products, including smaller batches, faster feedback loops, compliance and risk management, supplier alignment, and integration of hardware teams into Agile Release Trains (ARTs).

The course uses hardware-focused guidance and practical examples. After attending and passing the exam, participants can earn the SAFe Hardware Practitioner (SHWP) certification and digital badge.

What You Will Learn

Lesson 1: Introducing SAFe

  • Review SAFe core values, principles, and the Lean-Agile mindset in the context of mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineering.

  • Discuss uncertainty in physical product development, including long lead times, safety-critical constraints, compliance needs, and hardware change costs.

Lesson 2: Form Agile Teams as a Release Train

  • Learn how cross-functional hardware teams work within an Agile Release Train, including Product Owner, Scrum Master or Team Coach, and engineering roles.

  • Compare SAFe Scrum and SAFe Team Kanban for hardware work, supplier coordination, and specialist team handoffs.

Lesson 3: Connect to the Customer

  • Apply customer centricity and design thinking to physical systems, product requirements, and solution intent.

  • Use vision, roadmaps, Features, and Stories to connect engineering work with customer and market needs.

Lesson 4: Plan the Work

  • Prepare team backlogs and take part in PI Planning with hardware constraints, integration points, supplier timing, and dependency risks in view.

  • Practice team planning, estimation, and commitment discussions for hardware increments.

Lesson 5: Deliver Value

  • Use the Continuous Delivery Pipeline concepts for hardware, including prototypes, test environments, and synchronized mechanical, electrical, and software work.

  • Build quality into development through integration, compliance checks, and regular ART sync events.

Lesson 6: Get Feedback

  • Use Iteration Reviews, System Demos, technical tests, and stakeholder feedback to learn earlier and adjust designs.

Lesson 7: Improve Relentlessly

  • Review competency, flow, and outcome measures to identify bottlenecks and improve delivery practices.

  • Prepare for the SAFe 6 Hardware Practitioner, SHWP, certification using instructor-led lessons, workbook activities, and exam-focused review.

Certification & Exam

Participants who attend SAFe® for Hardware Teams can prepare for the SAFe Hardware Practitioner (SHWP) certification from Scaled Agile. The assessment is web-based, closed book, and available through the learner’s Learning Plan after course completion.

The SHWP exam has 20 questions, a 45-minute time limit, and an 80% passing score. The first two attempts are included when taken within 60 days of course completion. If further attempts are needed, the standard SAFe retake policy applies: the third attempt is available immediately after the second failed attempt, the fourth after 10 days, and later attempts after 30-day waiting periods.

Successful candidates receive the SAFe Hardware Practitioner certification, a certificate of completion, and a shareable digital badge. For current terms, see the official Scaled Agile certification page.

What You Will Achieve

After completing SAFe® for Hardware Teams, participants will be able to:

  • Apply SAFe Lean-Agile principles to hardware development environments with long lead times, safety-critical constraints, and mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering dependencies.

  • Design smaller work batches and faster feedback loops to support physical product development and reduce late-stage learning.

  • Integrate Agile hardware teams into Agile Release Trains, including coordination across mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineering work.

  • Manage compliance and risk in hardware development without slowing delivery, using early feedback and continuous risk review.

  • Improve collaboration among engineering teams, product and project managers, quality and compliance professionals, suppliers, and other stakeholders.

  • Plan hardware delivery using SAFe practices that account for supplier alignment, engineering constraints, and synchronization across hardware and software work.

  • Prepare for the SAFe 6 Hardware Practitioner, SHWP certification exam by applying course concepts and using the provided workbook, learning platform, practice test, and study resources.
