Description

This provider-led course prepares professionals familiar with SAFe for the SAFe Release Train Engineer certification and the RTE role on an Agile Release Train.

Participants study ART coordination, PI Planning preparation and facilitation, PI execution, dependency and risk management, Kanban, flow metrics, Inspect & Adapt, value stream mapping, coaching techniques, and responsible AI use with tools such as SAFe CoPilot.

Training may be virtual or in-person, with lectures, exercises, simulations, and exam preparation. After completion, participants can support ART alignment, improve flow visibility, facilitate key SAFe events, and prepare for the certification exam.

What You Will Learn

Course content follows the current AI-Empowered SAFe Release Train Engineer curriculum from Scaled Agile. Participants study the Release Train Engineer role through instructor-led teaching, practical exercises, role-based simulations, SAFe Studio resources, and exam preparation activities.

RTE role and ART organization

  • Responsibilities and behaviors of a Release Train Engineer in SAFe

  • Lean-Agile Mindset, SAFe Principles, and SAFe Core Values

  • Characteristics of an effective Agile Release Train, including key ART roles and responsibilities

PI Planning and ART execution

  • Preparing for and facilitating PI Planning events

  • Managing dependencies, risks, team objectives, and ART objectives

  • Using tools to visualize work and support flow across teams

  • Basic Agile quality practices and the Continuous Delivery Pipeline with DevOps

Flow, improvement, and coaching

  • Measuring flow with SAFe flow metrics and applying practices to reduce bottlenecks

  • Preparing for IP iteration activities and facilitating Inspect and Adapt events

  • Using systems thinking and value stream mapping to improve ART performance

  • Applying coaching and group facilitation techniques for Scrum Masters, teams, and stakeholders

AI for the RTE role and certification readiness

  • AI basics, prompt writing, responsible AI use, and human review of AI output

  • Use of SAFe CoPilot and AI-assisted work for dependency mapping, flow analysis, risk review, and coaching plans

  • Preparation for the SAFe Release Train Engineer exam, including practice questions and study guidance

Certification & Exam

Completion of this course prepares participants for the SAFe Certified Release Train Engineer certification from Scaled Agile.

The course uses the AI-Empowered SAFe curriculum and covers the Release Train Engineer role, including ART coordination, PI Planning, flow management, Lean-Agile leadership, Inspect and Adapt, and coaching across Agile Release Trains. The certification exam assesses the core RTE objectives and does not currently test AI concepts.

The certification process includes preparation resources in SAFe Studio and a timed multiple-choice exam. The exam has 60 questions, a 120-minute time limit, and requires a 82% passing score. Participants who pass earn the SAFe Release Train Engineer credential, a digital badge, and eligibility for PMI PDUs and Scrum CEUs.

What You Will Achieve

After completing the SAFe Release Train Engineer course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the responsibilities, behaviors, Lean-Agile mindset, SAFe Principles, and SAFe Core Values expected of a Release Train Engineer.

  • Organize an Agile Release Train by defining effective ART characteristics and clarifying key ART roles and responsibilities.

  • Prepare and facilitate PI Planning, including alignment around objectives, dependency management, risk review, and planning commitments.

  • Support PI execution by identifying team and ART objectives, using tools to visualize flow, and connecting Agile quality practices with the Continuous Delivery Pipeline and DevOps.

  • Analyze value flow using Kanban, flow metrics, bottleneck identification, and waste reduction practices.

  • Facilitate Inspect and Adapt events, IP iteration activities, and value stream mapping to support continuous improvement across the ART.

  • Coach Scrum Masters, teams, and stakeholders using group facilitation techniques, coaching practices, and awareness of group dynamics.

  • Apply AI basics, prompting techniques, responsible AI practices, and tools such as SAFe CoPilot to support flow analysis, risk review, stakeholder communication, and coaching plans.
