The iSAQB® architecture documentation training is a module within the CPSA Advanced Level certification. It teaches professionals how to document and communicate software architectures using established standards and technical notation.

Course Content

The syllabus was developed with regard to the syllabus of iSAQB e.v. (version 1.5) published in February 2015 and consists of the following six parts.

Part 1-Basic concepts of software architecture documentation

Part 2-Documentation and procedure

Part 3-Components of architectural documentation

Part 4-Tools

Part 5-Rate documentation

Part 6-Examples for the documentation of software architectures

Certification

After you complete the ADOC training, you earn 20 credit points in the “methodical competence” area of the Advanced Level program.

You then collect further modules until you reach at least 70 credit points across the three competence areas (methodical, technological, communicative).

To be eligible for the final Advanced Level certification, you must:

  • Already hold the CPSA-F (Foundation Level) certificate.

  • have at least three years of full-time professional experience in IT, including participation in the design and development of two or more different IT systems.

  • participate in the CPSA-A examination, which involves an assignment and an interview by iSAQB-appointed examiners.

Outcome

Participants learn to plan, create, and maintain software architecture documentation throughout the development lifecycle. The course covers technical, organizational, and social factors to ensure documentation supports project goals and meets the requirements of developers, managers, and other stakeholders.

  • Identify documentation goals and stakeholder needs to ensure information is relevant and used by the target group.

  • Use the arc42 template and ISO/IEC 42010 standards to provide a clear structure for architectural information.

  • Apply notation systems such as UML, C4, and ArchiMate to create technical visualizations.

  • Document architectural decisions and cross-cutting concepts to ensure design choices are traceable.

  • Select tool chains including documentation-as-code and generative artificial intelligence tools for efficient maintenance.

  • Assess the quality of architectural documentation using objective review methods and checklists.

  • Integrate documentation tasks into different development processes, including agile environments.

  • Manage documentation for new projects as well as for the post-documentation of existing legacy systems.
