What You Will Learn

This training introduces you to the fundamentals of network security and teaches you how to protect systems, networks and devices against common threats.

Part 1: Introduction to network defense — basic security concepts, threat types, network defense goals and security terminology

Part 2: Network fundamentals — network components, IP addressing, protocols, routing, switching and how data moves across networks

Part 3: Secure network design — segmentation, secure topologies, firewalls, IDS/IPS and essential defense-in-depth principles

Part 4: System security — securing operating systems, patching, configuration management and endpoint protection basics

Part 5: Application and web security — common application vulnerabilities and basic defensive techniques

Part 6: Wireless network security — wireless standards, risks and how to secure Wi-Fi environments

Part 7: Cloud and virtualization security — cloud service models, shared responsibility, virtualized environments and basic cloud defenses

Part 8: IoT and mobile security — risks associated with connected devices and best practices for securing mobile and IoT systems

Part 9: Cryptography fundamentals — encryption basics, hashing, certificates and secure communication concepts

Part 10: Monitoring and incident basics — log monitoring, alerts, simple threat detection and steps for responding to basic security incidents

Certification & Exam

After you complete the Network Defense Essentials training, you can register for the NDE certification exam. The exam evaluates your understanding of basic network security concepts, secure system practices and common defensive measures.

The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 2 hours. To pass the exam, you must reach the required passing score, which is typically 70%. The exam can be taken online through a remote-proctored platform.

When you pass the exam, you receive the NDE certificate, confirming your foundational skills in network protection, secure configuration, basic monitoring and defense techniques. This certification is an ideal starting point for further cybersecurity studies.
