The Advanced Level Test Analyst certification provides the skills needed to perform structured and thorough software testing across the software development life cycle. It details the test analyst’s role and responsibilities at every step of a standard test process and expands on important test techniques.
It mainly focuses on functional testing but also discusses user-focused, non-functional testing.
The ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Analyst (CTAL-TA) v4.0 builds on Foundation Level knowledge, focusing on the practical application of testing tasks. The syllabus includes five modules.
Module 1- The Test Analyst Role
This module covers managing test activities, coordinating with stakeholders, and selecting tools for test analysis and design.
Module 2- Risk-Based Testing
Participants learn to identify and assess product risks to prioritize testing and determine risk levels for different project components.
Module 3- Test Analysis and Design
This section covers black-box test techniques, including:
Equivalence Partitioning and Boundary Value Analysis
Decision Table and State Transition Testing
Use Case, User Story, and Checklist-Based Testing
Module 4- Quality Characteristics
This module focuses on non-functional testing, including:
Functional Suitability and Usability
User Experience (UX) and Accessibility standards
Interoperability and Portability
Module 5- Defect Management and Prevention
This topic covers the defect life cycle, reporting, root cause analysis, and the use of reviews to prevent defects before coding begins.

The ISTQB® Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) certification is the cornerstone of essential testing knowledge that can be applied to real-world scenarios. The syllabus provides a comprehensive understanding of the terminology and concepts used in the testing domain worldwide, making it relevant for all software delivery approaches and practices, including Agile, DevOps, and Continuous Delivery.CTFL certification is recognized as a prerequisite to all other ISTQB® certifications where the Foundation Level is required.
The Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Automation Engineering (CTAL-TAE) qualification is aimed at anyone involved in software testing and test automation. This includes people in roles such as testers, test analysts, test automation engineers, test consultants, test architects, test managers, and software developers. This qualification is also appropriate for anyone who wants a basic understanding of test automation, such as project managers, quality managers, software development managers, business analysts, IT directors and management consultants.
The ISTQB® Advanced Level Test Management (CTAL-TM) certification provides the knowledge and competencies to take responsibility for managing all the testing activities across the software development lifecycle. It covers everything from how to design a suitable test approach for the project based on the organizational test strategy to building a test team or testing competencies to complete the necessary testing.
The ISTQB® Advanced Level Agile Technical Tester (CTAL-ATT) certification provides a thorough introduction to the technical testing skills which are fundamental in organizations using an Agile development approach. These skills include testing and agile techniques, test automation approaches, and continuous deployment and delivery.
The ISTQB® Agile Test Leadership at Scale (CT-ATLaS) certification focuses on how to organize and improve quality and testing across multiple teams in an agile organization. It also covers how to approach quality and testing at a strategic level in order to achieve higher business agility in an organization. CT-ATLaS covers how to scale testing and quality assurance efforts by fostering a quality mindset and culture across the organization. This includes shifting from a traditional test management approach typically used in sequential development models to a quality assistance approach which builds on Lean and Agile principles and values. It also includes how to adopt common Lean and Agile techniques and processes for analyzing and solving problems and how to use them to improve testing and quality in the organization.
The ISTQB® Foundation Level Agile Tester (CTFL-AT) certification provides the key testing skills necessary to successfully contribute to an Agile project. CTFL-AT covers agile testing in alignment with the principles of agile software development as outlined in the Agile Manifesto. A tester on an Agile project will work differently than one working on a traditional project. Testers must understand the values and principles that underpin Agile projects, and how testers are an integral part of a whole-team approach together with developers and business representatives.
